Some Like It Cold: The “Conundrum of Samail” Revisited

چکیده

Most tectonic models consider that the “Samail subduction zone” was only zone at mid-Cretaceous convergent Arabian margin. We report four new Rb-Sr multimineral isochron ages from high-pressure (HP) rocks and a major shear of uppermost Ruwi-Yiti Unit Saih Hatat window in Oman Mountains NE Arabia. These demand reassessment intraoceanic suprasubduction-zone evolution formed Samail Ophiolite its metamorphic sole zone. Some like it cold: understanding the survival strategies of psychrophiles.

Much of the Earth's surface, both marine and terrestrial, is either periodically or permanently cold. Although habitats that are largely or continuously frozen are generally considered to be inhospitable to life, psychrophilic organisms have managed to survive in these environments. This is attributed to their innate adaptive capacity to cope with cold and its associated stresses. Here, we revi...

Some like it cold: biocatalysis at low temperatures.

In the last few years, increased attention has been focused on a class of organisms called psychrophiles. These organisms, hosts of permanently cold habitats, often display metabolic fluxes more or less comparable to those exhibited by mesophilic organisms at moderate temperatures. Psychrophiles have evolved by producing, among other peculiarities, "cold-adapted" enzymes which have the properti...

Some like it hot, some like it cold: Temperature dependent biotechnological applications and improvements in extremophilic enzymes.

The full biotechnological exploitation of enzymes is still hampered by their low activity, low stability and high cost. Temperature-dependent catalytic properties of enzymes are a key to efficient and cost-effective translation to commercial applications. Organisms adapted to temperature extremes are a rich source of enzymes with broad ranging thermal properties which, if isolated, characterize...

Some like it plastic.

The artist,. . ., like the thinker or the scientist, seeks the truth and makes his appeal.”1 The artist, however, enjoys a superior level of freedom and in doing so he “must strenuously aspire to the plasticity of sculpture, to the color of painting, and to the magic suggestiveness of music.” Plasticity is the foundation of the Manifesto of the Futurist Sculpture2: “the Futurist sculptor percei...

The conundrum of IT management

This paper presents a robust argument as to why it can be difficult for chief information officers (CIOs) to deliver business value from investments that their organizations make in IT with contemporary organizational structures, authority patterns, processes and mindsets. This argument is built on the subtle premise that organizations should not seek to merely manage IT but to manage the deliv...
